Things to do in the mountains of Puerto Rico: the Cordillera Central
The Cordillera Central runs the length of the island and has its highest peak, Cerro de Punta. It is a Puerto Rico of coffee farms, misty forests such as Toro Negro and Carite, waterfalls and river pools, and towns where the pace is slower than on the coast.
The Ruta Panorámica links it from end to end along narrow, winding roads with views of both coasts. On the way there are Taíno sites such as Caguana, in Utuado, and the roast pork stands of Guavate. Allow more time than the map suggests and avoid driving after dark.
